Markets in Menorca provide the ideal place to purchase some original Menorcan
products, and it's certainly worth noting that the Ciutadella markets were first
established way back in 1301 by Jaime II as part of the Christian conquest of
the island.
In these picturesque, colourful and multi-ethnologic places you'll find nearly
everything, from basic food produce to the ultimate fashion trend, all in a
familiar relaxed atmosphere.
Most winter markets on the island are held in the morning, and summer ones in
the evening, but whenever you visit you'll need to get there early and be
prepared to haggle like a professional to secure the best bargains.
A couple of words of advice, do not start to negotiate if you have no intention
of buying, but do not be afraid to say no and walk away if the prices do not
fall to a level that you are prepared to pay for an item. Common sense we know,
but still easy to forget.
Certainly worth a mention are the three weekly open air markets that are held at
the Placa Espanya in nearby Ferreries throughout the year. On Tuesday and Friday
mornings these are traditional fruit and produce markets, whereas the one held
on the Saturday morning would possibly hold more appeal to visitors, as it does
tend to have more of a local handicraft theme.
